THE SILENCE IN THE DUNGEON WAS DEAFENING. We had moved from our camping position and made our way deeper into the dungeon. So far, we’d only encountered lesser wind spirits—weak, ethereal beings that were far less dangerous than the creatures from before. According to Louis, we were closer to the pickup location, meaning this quest would be coming to an end soon. Louis and Dalia couldn’t have been happier about that.

From the moment I agreed to let the other party tag along, I knew problems were inevitable. After the stunt they pulled yesterday by abandoning us, the tension between our two parties had grown. We couldn’t tolerate being near each other anymore. The only thing they’d contributed so far was their knowledge of the monsters and the terrain. Otherwise, they were useless—almost as if they were being useless on purpose.

“Oi... we’ve been walking for hours. Mind if we take a break?” Torfij called from behind us.

“This is your fifth time asking for a break in the past hour,” I responded.

“Well, there’s a reason for that. Don’t ya think?”

“And what reason would that be?” I turned around to find Ingrid breathing heavily and clutching a hand to her stomach.

She’s…

“Let’s stop,” I called out to Dalia and Louis, who halted immediately.

“What? Why? We’re close to the pickup location,” Louis protested.

“If we’re close, then we can afford to rest for a bit, because, as you can see, Miss Ingrid here is pregnant.”

Their faces showed shock and reluctance, but they sighed and complied, dropping their supplies on the floor.

“Thank you,” Ingrid said to me under her breath. I nodded in acknowledgment before heading back to sit with my team.

“So far, Ard, they’ve been nothing but a liability. Now we find out she’s pregnant? What kind of woman would endanger herself like that?” Dalia fumed, not caring if the other party overheard.

She had a point. Going on an expedition while pregnant was one of the most reckless and foolish decisions I’d ever heard of.

“I’m just glad this will all be over soon,” Louis said, holding the map up to his face. “We should reach the pickup location in four, maybe six hours, depending on our pace. But with them taking breaks every few minutes, it could take us a whole day. Do we really need them? This could’ve been over by now.”

Louis and Dalia shared the same frustration, and I’d reached a point where I could no longer ignore it.

“Very well,” I said, turning to Torfij and his team. “We’ll move forward in thirty minutes; I believe that should be enough time to rest.”

“But—” Ingrid began to protest.

“I don’t want to hear it,” I interrupted. “When we first got here, you walked a longer distance without needing to rest. You can do the same now, or one of the men in your team can carry you. Either way, we’re moving forward with no stops, with or without you.”

“Why, you!” Dennis, the other man in their team, stood up, nostrils flaring. “I’ve had just about enough of you, kid.
